Who I am?

Let me introduce myself - my name is Milica Tancic (she/her), and I’m a dance artist based in Berlin.

In recent times, I found myself more and more interested in working on the intersection of dance, queerness, and Balkan heritage. I firmly believe in the fundamental and transformative potential of movement and deeply value the power and beauty of the body and that the act of dancing can tap into embodied knowledge and evoke change. In my work, I aim to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and promote inclusion while inviting questioning of the meaning of identity and cultural heritage.

I tend to be growingly pessimistic regarding the future of our planet and societies, but my utopian artistic vision of an inclusive and accepting society where individuals from diverse backgrounds can embrace their identities without fear or judgment is what keeps me motivated in my work. That is why I love facilitating safe spaces that are inviting for exchange and sharing.

Experiences

I was born in Serbia and professionally trained at the National Ballet School “Lujo Davičo” (Serbia), Budapest Contemporary Dance Academy and Berlin Dance Institute. I performed at the Bitef Theatre, Belgrade (2019) and have been a part of the A.PART Festival at ada Studio Berlin (2021, 2022) where I premiered my solo "common thread". I participated in a series of instant composition performances "Embodying Landscapes" throughout Berlin (including Performing Arts Festival 2022) and took part in the project "HABITAT" choreographed by Doris Uhlich within the Britney X Festival in Cologne (2022).

In 2023 I participated in the international multidisciplinary project DeStructura with an artivist project about animal rights, “Nonhuman Animal”; and realised my solo project, a transgenerational research on dementia that the DIS-TANZ-SOLO stipend has funded. I was participating as a dance artist at Oulu Dance Hack 2023, which focused on the intersection between AI, dance and technology. Together with filmmaker Branka Pavlović, I choreographed and performed in a dance film about a forgotten dancer and feminist icon Maga Magazinović, titled "MAGA 1909”.

I have also been working at the International Theatre Institute Germany since 2021 on various projects, including the archive of the Media Library for Dance and Theatre, tanz:digital and Theater der Welt. Currently, I am co-leading a workshop project for queer youth "Deluluk" which focuses on education and empowerment through performing arts.
